We spent the first day getting acquainted with the bustling metropolis that is Klamath Falls. Ty gave us a tour of his newspaper and also showed us around downtown. We also stopped by Fred Meyer to pick up some supplies for the next leg of our journey.
Thursday morning we had a lot to accomplish: visit Crater Lake, drive the Oregon Waterfall Scenic Byway and get to the Oregon coast (Brookings, Oregon to be more specific). At Crater Lake there was still snow on the ground, and the lake was really peaceful and beautiful. The waterfalls were equally as impressive and the three of us had a good time exploring around the waterfalls.
The drive along the coast was really beautiful. We rented a little cottage with a hot tub and a view of the ocean and spent Thursday night relaxing. On Friday, we spent some more time exploring the coast, including a visit to the lighthouse on Cape Blanco, the most western point of the lower 48 states. On our way back to Klamath Falls we dipped down to California and drove through Redwood National Forest.
On Saturday we drove down to the Lava Beds National Monument and spent the morning climbing around the volcanic rock and exploring caves caused by the lava flow. Thanks to Ty (and his cat Jasper) for hosting us and putting up with all of our antics. All in all, we had a really good trip. Of course . . . we’re already ready for the next vacation . . .
